Craft Tips Everyone Should Know

This post is for all the aspiring crafters (and even advanced DIY'ers) who want to make their handmade project flow a little smoother! I hope you will learn something new about crafting, as many of these tips have been a tremendous help to me.

Craft Tips Everyone Should Know

1. Is your shape cutter getting dull? Punch a pice of foil or sandpaper to sharpen it up.

2. Keep your hands clean! Clean hands = a clean, well-crafted project.

3. Are there annoying strings hanging from your glue gun tip? Use a blow dryer to zap the strings away (seriously, I tried it and it works!)

4. Save bits of scrap paper and store for later use. You can use these later to matte journaling blocks or small pictures when scrapbooking.

5. Ahhh, my glue is so runny! Place it in the freezer for 30 minutes to thicken it up.

6. Use containers from the hardware store typically used to store nails and screws. It will come in handy when storing small items such as button parts, grommets, punched die cuts, eyelets, and more.

7. My sticker collection is a mess! Use a 3-ring binder with clear sleeves to hold stickers by theme and/or color.

8. Change your X-acto blade often. There's nothing worse for your project than a dull blade.

9. Do you have frayed brushes after drying? Store small paint brushes in straws to keep from fraying.

10. Need some organization in your craft space? Be unique and work with what you got!

11. Lastly, don't be scared to try something new. Your ideas are all you need to get started!

FYF Fest Saves State Parks!

Yesterday, I spent the day with thousands sweaty, dirt-covered rock fans in downtown Los Angeles at the L.A. State Historic Park, and it was lovely.

Of my favorite performers was Mika Miko, who I had never seen live before. Just a handful of gals (Jessie Clavin, Jenna Thornhill, Jennifer Clavin, + Michelle Suarez) from Los Angeles singing their hearts out and having a good ol' time. I love that the singer, Jennifer Clavin, sang through a red phone instead of a microphone.

The Thermals were there, and I got to hear my favorite songs before heading out to see Lightning Bolt. For it being my first Lightning Bolt experience, I was in awe of how fast the drummer moved his skinny little arms. He also wore a very "Mexican wrestler" type face mask adorned with mini ears (which threw me off a little). My husband and our friends who are huge fans said they usually don't play on a stage, but usually play in the middle of all the fans. I still thought they sounded pretty good considering. ♥ Here are some pics from a show they played in Brooklyn that show how rowdy the fans get, and how close they are to these guys!

All in all, I has so much fun with all of my friends and hope to add some more photos to this post once I upload my pictures. If you are interested in seeing Mika Miko soon, here is alist of some of their upcoming shows:

October 7th 8:00pm El Rey Theater L.A., California

October 8th 8:00pm Slims San Francisco, California

Wish List for Back to School

Even though I've graduated and am no longer a student, I still want these awesome back-to-school items. I guess they would come in handy in the office too, but I think any college kid would feel pretty cool whipping one of these items out of their backpack.

Chronicle Books Hammerpress High Quality Notebook - $9.95

Chronicle Books Fuck You and Your Blog Journal - $9.95

Paper-Source Dessert Eraser Set - $8.95

Lastly, decorate your walls with posters by Nate Duval. There is a Back 2 Skool sale running though the weekend. Buy a poster, get free domestic shipping. Pretty bad ass.

Eye Candy at Amy Atlas

For those of you who have never heard of Amy Atlas (and how could you not!), this post should give you goosebumps. The following photos are an assortment of the sweets tables she's created for special events like weddings, birthdays, even Halloween! Not only are these photos great for your own wedding inspiration, but I hope they make you drool a little too.

Amy Atlas is based in New York City. You can contact her here if interested in a quote or adding her to you blog. All pictures seen below were taken from the Amy Atlas Events website.

This last picture was inspiration for my own wedding last year. I first saw this picture in a wedding magazine (I can't remember which one!) and I instantly wanted this color theme.

Gocco Machine Dreams + Inspiration

I have been wanting a gocco machine for as long as I can remember. I've been researching the heck out of them, so I think I will be making a purchase here in next month or so. For those of you who know what Pop + Shorty is all about, you may think...hmmm? Gocco seems way different than the crisp, digital prints of our current stuff. I think that is why I am so excited! While I love Illustrator, and crisp, vector lines (oh, yes I do love vector!), I also want to try my hand at something new. It's always a good idea as a crafter / artist / designer / dreamer to seek out and try new ways of creating.

If you are a lover of gocco or are interesting in learning more, check out the Save Gocco site. Here you can read about the history of the gocco machine and link to artists on their blog that create delightful gocco prints.

Below is a step-by-step of how one of my favorite gocco designers, Lab Partners in San Francisco, made their Queen print.

Here are a some more samplings from Lab Partners. I am amazed by how crisp everything looks using the gocco machine. I would die to travel up to San Francisco and have them teach me all they know about gocco printing. It would be a dream come true! My favorite in this series are the miniature thank you cards that accompany each Lab Partners order when you purchase items in their Etsy store. Right now, the shop is empty while they create more lovely goods. You can visit the store and sign up to be notified when items are added.
I have an especially cute idea in mind as decoration in our new place (which we haven't picked out yet, but our lease ends in November). When we move, I'm making sure the walls are covered in prints, some my own and some of my favorite artists.

Lastly, check out this YouTube video made by EtsyLabs to get a first-hand look at how to make your own Valentine's. (Well, Valentine's Day is very far away, but you can just change the holiday to Halloween!)

Renegade Craft Fair Chicago : Update

Yes, friends. The Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago is almost here! Here are some updates that will definitely make you wanna be there (in case you were being silly and only thinking about it). The brass and reed ensemble Black Bear Combo will be playing both days. Dancing and shopping. Could it get any better? Across from my booth space is the Spins & Needles interactive booth, where you can make really cool DIY stuff like coasters, sock animals, and paint-by-number portraits. MANA Food Bar and Big Bite Catering will se selling delicious treats, and there will be beer and wine for purchase too. It is sponsored by PBR after all! If thatwasn't enough, there's also free raffles of various publications from Chronicle Books and the book Handmade Nation by Faythe Levine.
